TOWN
OF VAIL, COLORADO
The town of Vail existed only as a small grouping of
several houses when the Vail Ski Resort
opened in 1962. The town of Vail came into existence
when it incorporated late in 1966. Vail is divided into
East Vail and West Vail. There is a seven member town
council and it is run by a council & manager form of
city government. The medium elevation is over 8,000 feet
above sea level. The area is ringed by the White River
National Forest. Vail is proud of having the largest
zero fare shuttle bus system in the US. Former President
Gerald Ford used Vail as a base of operations when he
vacationed in the West during the 1970’s. This gave the
city of Vail international attention. The Vail Film
Festival is hosted there every March as is the Bravo
Vail Valley Music Festival. A well known orthopedic
medical clinic, the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic, is based in
the Vail Valley. You can also find the Colorado Ski
Museum located here Magazine named Vail as the number
resort in North America for the 2006-2007 ski season.
